Chapter One

The Dateless Past.

The complete book online

A thundering wail echoed throughout the universe sending shivers of fear through every living thing. Heartbreak, anger and betrayal reverberated through the corridors of time and space.

Trembling uncontrollably the historian heard the cry of anguish through the thick stone walls of the great room beneath the Sphinx. He clutched the thin book given to him by one the Great Ones as if afraid his trembling would cause him to lose it. He had been instructed to place it in this hidden vault the presence of which was known only to a select few.

Michael, the Great One who had given him the book, was different from the others of his kind. He towered over the Atlanteans. Power and beauty emanated from his person the same as the others, but something seemed different. He impressed the ancient historian with his urgency. "Hide the book in the black box in the vault," he said. "There's a cube in the room for you to observe events and record them."

The historian searched the room. A glow emanated from the walls lighting the room with a soft incandescence. Artifacts, books and others items of value were placed about. Gold and precious stones glittered in the light. These items were to tell future generations of their history, but who would read it now? There would be no one to see it.

The wisest and most powerful of all the Great Ones had insisted the people of Earth do this. Even those of the Atlanteans who had colonies on other worlds of this system had been instructed to do the same.

The Great Ones had taught them to build huge monuments in stone. Indeed they had placed much of the stonework themselves. All structures were built to last forever.

The historian could feel the trembling of the earth around him. He hoped the Great Ones were right about the durability of their structures.

He looked around the room for the black box and the cube as he had been instructed. So many beautiful things. Statues of Atlanteans, artwork in brilliant colors and their so-called gods of gold were everywhere. The Sphinx itself was a replica of an Atlantean leader set atop an animal of great power. It faced the constellation after which it was designed.

Three pyramids were to have been built to further designate the age in which it was created, but time had run out. The plans had been left in the temple grounds surrounding the Sphinx.

He found the black box. It was hidden in an obscure corner as if placed there as an afterthought. It was no larger than a jewelry box. He picked it up and examined it for a way to open it. The black material was of an almost transparent stone. Black clouds seemed to move in it when he picked it up. The box opened when he touched the top as if it had been waiting just for him.

Inside there were plans for buildings, mathematical equations, plans for spacecraft and propulsion systems. All the sciences were represented. It was written in the common language of Atlantis and placed on a thin film-like material.

He placed the small thin book at the bottom of the box. It fit perfectly as if made just for this box. The Great Ones always did things to perfection. They had taught the Atlanteans the sciences of the universe and their civilization had prospered and flourished so well it was the envy of every world in the galaxy and beyond.

The historian, the oldest Atlantean at over a thousand years, carefully placed the black box where he had found it. It closed by itself. One could not even see the seam of the lid.

Adonix searched for the viewing cube. The roaring and trembling of the earth outside had stopped as if waiting for him. He could see something glowing as if with a light of its own. It cast it's light on the stone wall near it.

He took it in his hands and placed it at eye level as he sat on a cushion on the ground. He took out his writing materials and waited.

Swirling mists cleared and pictures began to form within the cube. Remembering his instructions, Adonix prepared to write down what he saw. Michael taught him a strange new language and instructed him to write the history in that language. He wondered who would be able to read it other than the Great Ones themselves. The thin book was written in that same language.

Fascinated he watched the pictures in the cube and understood why all the Great Ones had suddenly fled leaving the Atlanteans behind to face whatever fate befell them.   Where had they gone to hide themselves from this?  Had any of his  people escaped into space ships? Had any on the colonies of other worlds escaped? Had there been time? He watched and wrote.

Even through the thick walls he could hear the scream and roar of the earth as it wobbled in its orbit and careened through space howling its death agony. He saw mountains exploding and volumes of black ash rising into the atmosphere. Expanding rivers of lava flowed everywhere. The Earth rocked and rolled opening great fissures in the earth letting out steam, more lava and boiling water.

The picture shifted showing a view of Earth from space. The orbit was changed and it was heading closer to the sun. The great water wall that surrounded the Earth melted. The hydrogen of the wall frozen in a perpetual metallic shield around the Earth while the oxygen swirled beneath it gave way in a great flood that totally encompassed the planet. The water wall had acted as not only a defense against harmful rays from space, but as a huge magnifying glass giving everyone on Earth a spectacular view of the heavens.

He saw animals and men frozen in place as the clouds of ash blocked the heat and light of the sun. The sudden melting of the water wall caused great mountains of water to fall to the earth freezing instantly as the planet raced past the sun and headed for the cold blackness of space.

Adonix wept as he saw his people frozen in death. Most had died in agony as the very air they breathed filled with poisonous gases. Just before the great water wall fell he saw a neighboring planet crumble.

Some of the debris stayed in place orbiting the sun and some debris hit the Earth and its moon and other planets in the solar system. He even saw space ships fleeing , but they were caught in the gravitational pull of the careening planets and exploded.

The picture changed. He looked in horror at the devastation. Earth was now almost completely encased in ice with dark clouds surrounding it. The roaring outside stopped. He was now alone in a terrible silence. Time seemed to stop. Hours, days, weeks, ceased to be. He had no sense of how much time had gone by as he watched and wrote.

The heart of God had been broken by the Great One who had been closest to Him and called  friend.  Betrayed!

Michael told him about it with tears in his eyes. Judgment had to come on the civilization Lucifer and the Great Ones who followed him governed.

Adonix shook his head in awe and sorrow. So many of the Great Ones had turned against their Creator. God had waited for eons of time giving Lucifer and the others chance after chance to change and turn back to Him. Now it had come to this.

All those he had ever known were dead. So alone ... alone.

When he had finished writing of Earth's death, he began writing a history of his people. He must tell others who might come after of their terrible fate and why it had happened lest it should, God forbid, happen again!
