Chapter Thirty

A New Mission

Murphy, Myrna and Syd were in front of the restaurant they had left from, but now it was dark and the streets were deserted. The festival décor had been partially taken down. A glance at the date on the newspaper in the newsstand in front of the restaurant showed them they had been gone for more than two weeks.

The restaurant was open and a few night owls conversed as they sipped their drinks and ate their midnight snacks.

“Let’s go in and sit down,” Myrna whispered weakly. “I don’t think I can even get to the car right now.”

The others nodded in agreement and they all found a comfortable booth and waited for someone to wait on them. When glasses of water were brought they all gulped them down and motioned for the waitress to bring them more and ordered soft drinks to follow. None of them wanted any food, just fluid.

“I feel like I have been in a desert without water for days.” Syd tested his lips with his fingers. They were cracked and dry. “I have heard about the results of some of these abductions. People become dehydrated and have wounds and rashes in geometric patterns. When we get home we should check for rashes and any other marks especially you, Myrna. That stuff hit you right in the chest.”

“I can still feel it. I just want to sleep. I feel so weak.”

“We’ll go as soon as we finish our drinks,” Murphy said. “We need to check you over, my love. You got the worst of it.”

“You need to take a look at yourself, Murphy.” Syd said. “Your eyes are black and there are little broken veins in them. Looks terrible. Chocking is definitely not good for one’s health.”

“My poor baby,” Myrna crooned patting his face gently. “I am glad I wasn’t awake to see when it happened.

“I wonder what is happening to Jeremiah. We must pray for him.” Myrna said. “Let’s do it now before we do anything else.”

Not caring what others around them thought they joined hands and prayed for their friend.

Jeremiah lay naked and shivering in the cool night air unable to think clearly. He did not even know where he was. In shock he looked around in a daze. He seemed to be in a wooded area just off a road. He could hear the soft crunch of footsteps coming toward him.

Unmoving he waited wrapping his arms around his knees for warmth.

A soft glow appeared next to him. Hands reached out and wrapped a warm blanket around him. “Your friends are praying for you.” Then the glowing man gave him a large cup of the most wonderful tasting water he had ever had. He drank it all then turned to the man to ask where he was.

“I will take you back to the home of your friend, Syd. You can rest then.”

“Who are you?”

“I am one sent by God to minister to you.” He then led Syd to a silver car. Jeremiah could not identify the make and model, but it was warm and comfortable. Before he could even think of another question he fell into a deep and dreamless sleep.

When Syd got home he noted without surprise the sleeping Jeremiah tucked into the extra bed. He called Murphy to inform him their prayers had been answered then collapsed into his own bed asleep the moment his head touched the pillow.

“This calls for a major celebration. We came face to face with Lucifer’s high ranking minions and lived.” Murphy raised his glass of wine in a toast. They were all comfortably ensconced in a choice booth at the restaurant where they first met Syd.

“Correction, my dear.” Myrna chuckled. “Jeremiah came face to face with Lucifer himself. We just met some of his favorite henchmen.”

“The devil you say!” Murphy retorted then laughed.

“A word of caution,” Jeremiah intoned. “We did nothing. Our strength is solely in our faith in the One who defeated him in the first place.”

“Hear, hear!” Syd raised his glass with the others. “To the obliteration of  all the devil’s works and final victory of Jesus over that old dragon.”

“He is already defeated, “ Jeremiah insisted. “He just will not admit it. His pride gets in the way you know. He is an illegal alien here.”

They all took a sip of their drinks.

Myrna pondered in silence for a moment. “Why did Jesus allow us to go through so much pain in the first place? I don’t understand that.”

“If we had not, there would have been no way to stop the weapon. They would have found the other source of the weapon plans eventually. Also, since we live in this world we will suffer the trials of life, but as it was with Job, the devil was not allowed to kill us.” Jeremiah took a bite of his baked fish.

“Stop the weapon? Now I am confused. I thought you gave them the plans for the weapon.” Syd chewed on his steak as he waited for Jeremiah to explain.

“God gave me the language and later told me in a dream that He added an ingredient that will neutralize the weapon without them knowing it until it is too late. You did not think God would let that weapon come into the hands of that monster did you? God has stopped tyrants throughout the ages before they could destroy everything, even Hitler. I would have been happier if He had stopped him before killing so many, but who am I to question God, nu?”

“He stopped Saddam and in such an unexpected way. God is not about to let anyone upstage Him.” Myrna leaned back in her chair as she chewed her last bit of steak contentedly. Jeremiah’s answer made perfect sense to her.

“Now the ones who were after us have no reason to follow us any longer and the bad guy who killed my friend is dead.” Murphy said. “So now what? Can we go home now?”

“I want to call Agnes and make sure she is all right. We know what really happened to her husband so who is that man that went home with her? We haven’t had time to think about it with all that has happened, but now I am concerned about her. Syd, may I borrow your cell phone?”

While Myrna called her friend Jeremiah presented the group with their new mission.

“We must go to Egypt. We must put the same ‘strange ingredient’ instruction in the other weapon plans that are hidden on the Giza Plateau. We must also retrieve the Books of Enoch. I have a new hiding place for them where Lucifer can never get his hands on them. We have more than enough money for all we need to do. We will need to change it to paper money. I am asking you to do that, Syd. You know how to go about that, nu?”

“I can do that. It won’t be easy. Questions will be asked, but I can do that.”

“There’s more gold there than all of us could spend in ten lifetimes.” Myrna said thoughtfully after finishing her call. “Have any of you thought about what we should do with it?”

“I have an idea,” Syd volunteered. “We could set up a foundation to handle the funds and have it used to help needy causes or whatever we set it up to do and get some trustworthy experts to handle it. We can make the rest of the decisions later after we get back.”

“I like your idea.” Murphy said as he lit up his pipe and let a curl of smoke circle his head. “No one would have to know where the money came from or we could claim we got it from selling artifacts. We’ll think of something. It needs a name though. We need to ponder on that for a while.

“Jeremiah, do you know where we’re going when we get to Egypt? That’s a lot of sand to sift through.” Murphy paused for a moment. “Then again there’s the Egyptian government to consider.”

“Lucifer wanted to know where the books were and at the time I did not know so I told him the truth as I knew it at the time. I have pondered on that question since and God has helped me to remember and put things together so I am sure I know now. It has also been revealed to me how to put the information within the plans so it looks like the rest of the writing. All those trips through time studying ancient civilizations had a purpose and this is it. As for the Egyptian government, we will just be some stupid American tourists that got lost.”

“This is one trip I won’t make with the rest of you,” Myrna announced. “I need to get home and comfort a friend. Agnes husband died of a heart attack soon after they arrived home. The autopsy showed some strange things. All his organs were backwards and his gastro intestinal system…it…was totally…it had no opening or outlet. I don’t know how else to put it. He could not take in nourishment in any way except through his veins. It’s like someone took him apart, rearranged him and put him back together all wrong. Agnes was near hysteria on the phone. No one can tell her what really happened to her husband.

“There’s another reason. That last episode…all that pain…I am just too tired to do anymore. Maybe in a few years, but I have had all I can take. My chest hurts all the time, my legs feel weak; I know I’ve aged ten years in the last few weeks. I hope all of you understand, especially you, John. I won’t stop you from doing what you must. This is the sort of challenge and adventure you thrive on.”

“I think you have the right idea, my love. You have good reason to be tired.  Comfort your friend. I’ll feel better knowing you’re safe at home. Maybe you could set up that foundation for us. You have a wonderful imagination. You think of the name.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Syd agreed. Jeremiah also nodded his assent. Syd went on. “I’ll get the money transferred to wherever you want it before I leave.”

Jeremiah looked at all around the table. “I would like to make the first request of the new foundation. I wish a portion of it that all of you deem fair to go to Israel to help the victims of terrorism and the elderly. There are some names of organizations to send it to. I will write them down for you before I leave…if that is agreeable to everyone.”

“No argument from me.” Murphy said.

“Nor I,” said Syd and Myrna in unison.

Myrna brightened as if a light bulb had turned on in her head. “I have the   perfect name for our new foundation. We’ll call it the Good Samaritan Foundation. What do you guys think?”

They all clapped and Murphy added his bear hug of approval.

“It’s settled then. I’ll see to the travel arrangements after I get the gold switched and money put in the bank. I’ll see to it that all our names are on it with Myrna as official treasurer for now so all you have to do is transfer the funds when ready, Myrna. Sound OK with everyone?

“Sounds perfect,” Myrna said. “Be sure to give me those names and addresses before you leave, Jeremiah.”

“Well, then; next stop, Egypt,” Murphy said decisively.

Syd raised his glass of fruit juice in a toast. “Here’s to God’s wonderful angels watching over us all and protecting us as we go and to giving us wisdom in all we do.”

They all raised their glasses and said, “Amen.”
