Chapter Twenty-six

The Time Gate

The first week of July arrived blazing hot as usual with an occasional booming thunderstorm to make life interesting. The merchants and other inhabitants of Roswell were gearing up for the annual Roswell UFO Festival commemorating the 1947 UFO crash.  The population of forty-five thousand would swell to one hundred thousand or more as tourists converged on the UFO Mecca to buy, sell, trade or just enjoy the excitement. New Orleans had the Mardi Gras and Roswell had the UFO Festival.

People dressed as aliens paraded down the streets looking in shop windows also decorated with gray alien faces and flying saucers. Lines of people moved slowly into the door of the International UFO Museum and Research Center. Some went across the street to check out Syd’s Alien Resistance store. This was his busiest time of year.

He begged off going to the Capitan Mountain to look for Boyd and the relics until the busy week was over. Instead he armed his new friends and fellow adventurers with extra cell phones to keep him informed of their progress and a chain saw to cut up the tree at the top entrance of the cave. Unregistered weapons were added to each backpack as well. No one asked where they had come from and Syd did not offer to explain.

Murphy wondered if any normal weapon would even work on Boyd since he had become immortal.

“I don’t think we’ll even be noticed with all this gear.” Myrna commented as she looked out Syd’s store window. “It looks like the sixties out there with all the bandanas, long hair and backpacks. Some of these people must have hiked for miles to get here. One would think it was a religious journey or something.”

Syd nodded as he studied the passing crowd with the others. “For some of them that’s exactly what it is.”

Jeremiah looked troubled. “So many following this delusion, nu? To make it their god, their very reason for living. Oy, it is very sad. Satan has quite a stronghold here.”

“A lot of them are just curiosity seekers caught up in the party atmosphere. I would be leaving town to get away from it all if it were not for this store. If I can influence even a few to the truth I must do it.

“My SUV is stocked up with all your gear and parked out back. Here are the keys. I will be praying for you.” He put the keys in John’s hand.

“This is your calling and it is very important, Syd, my friend. We will miss you.” Jeremiah patted Syd on the shoulder.

They filed through the store and left quietly out the back door.

Myrna watched as Murphy and Jeremiah took turns sawing the large tree blocking the entrance into small pieces that could be picked up and put out of the way. The noise of the saw echoed through the woods causing the disturbed wild life to shriek in protest. She wondered if Boyd was close enough to hear.

Both men were sweating heavily in the muggy heat. The mountain was cooler by several degrees, but in July it was hot everywhere in New Mexico.  In town the temperature had been over 110 all week. Perhaps here it was a mere 90 which still made it hot enough for a hard sweat with any effort expended.

Finally the job was done and the entrance was now accessible.

“Let’s go.” Murphy turned to Myrna and motioned to her and they all disappeared into the cave.

Out of the sight of the group of humans, Anubis, Osiris and the hordes of demons followed their prey into the cave. Against their numbers these puny humans did not stand a chance.

It was several degrees cooler in the cave. Breathing sighs of relief they descended through the cavern. Boyd’s noxious odor lingered in the air leading toward the time tunnel. Silently motioning to the others to stay behind him, Murphy led the way.

Suddenly the glowing floor of the cavern swayed and rippled like the waves of an ocean. Dark forms darted toward them with glowing teeth. The smell of sulfur filled the air. Confused and disoriented, they fell to the floor.

Myrna screamed as burning pain ripped through her chest and blood spurted through her blouse and splashed onto the floor and backpack. Jeremiah and Murphy were screaming as well as invisible claws and teeth tore into them.

“It is the devil. It is the devil.” Jeremiah gasped as he struggled with an invisible attacker on the floor.

“In the Name of Jesus Christ I bind you, Satan, and all your minions attacking us. They must leave now…now…now.” Myrna screamed. “I need some agreement here.”

Jeremiah and Murphy repeated her words as loudly as they could and the attack stopped as suddenly as it had begun. They could see shafts of light darting about the cavern as the soldier angels of God armed with their words of faith drove back the enemy.

Checking their wounds they used antibiotic ointment and bandages from their first aid kits and dressed each other’s wounds before continuing on.

“I have a feeling we have to hurry. I know Boyd is here. I can feel it. He must be stopped.” Myrna stood up and joined Murphy and Jeremiah as they continued to the time tunnel.

XXX

Congratulating himself on his own cleverness, Boyd waited as the scenes went from one age to another. He already knew technology could not be taken through. Only natural elements. That was something else and gold was a natural element.

He had given a great deal of thought about which age would benefit him the most. He selected medieval Europe where he thought gold would buy him a comfortable house and a business and he could fade into obscurity in luxury.

Two insect demons still reeling from the onslaught of the angels tumbled into the tunnel where Boyd was. Enraged they screamed at him as they realized what he was about to do. They could not travel through time to follow him and Boyd knew it.

“We will inform The Company and all the others.”

“Go ahead. They’ll never find me”

“We will tell them about this time gate and into which age you go.”

“By that time…Time…what a wonderful word. By that time it will be too late you idiots.”

Hoisting his heavy gags of gold he made ready to jump through the time gate.

“Oh no you don’t!” Murphy hurtled through the air in a flying tackle and knocked Boyd down.

“Hurry, Jer. Help me pull him away from the gate.”

Taken by surprise and put off balance Boyd was stunned and they pulled him away from the gate far enough to stop the passing scenes. It became a blank wall again.

The insect demons looked at each other, nodded and flitted back to their home base to make their report. They cackled at the fact the humans had actually helped them without realizing it.

“So you think you can stop me?”

Boyd was once again holding John Murphy by the throat up off the floor of the tunnel squeezing slowly as Myrna beat at him futilely with her fists.  She picked up a loose rock and slammed it into his skull with all her strength causing him to let go of John who then lay motionless in a crumpled heap, his face blue and distorted.

Jeremiah was busy at the gate waiting for just the right moment and motioning to Myrna for help. They pushed Boyd through the Gate before he could regain his senses minus his bags of gold. Smiling they watched him disappear into the past then stepped back to John. The scenes from the past stopped and there was again nothing but a blank wall.

Jeremiah felt for a pulse. He shook his head in the negative.

“Noooooo. Not my John, Nooo,” Myrna screamed. Quickly she knelt beside him, tipped his back opened his blue lips and began breathing into his mouth. She gave three forceful puffs then pushed on his chest to get his heart started.

Jeremiah watched in amazement. He had never seen this procedure before. When she became exhausted he took over copying what he had seen her do.

Finally Murphy gasped. She felt for a pulse. It was there. It was weak and thready but it was there. She alternated crying and laughing. Jeremiah joined her. They waited until John was awake and gaining strength then told him what happened to Boyd.

“What will that madman do to the past?” John looked alarmed.

“Not much,” Myrna grinned. “Tell him, Jer.”

“He is in the very, very, ancient past full of big, bad bugs and a few dinosaurs. One velociraptor was waiting for him as we pushed him through. It welcomed him with open claws and teeth, I am happy to report. I wonder if the stinky fellow left a bad taste in the creature’s mouth.”

They all laughed in relief. Murphy suddenly sobered. “We have to get those relics and the ruby chair and all the information about the weapon back into the cavern.

XXX

All the artifacts and all other relics they could find were laboriously returned to the cavern.

“Did Syd put that other stuff in the packs that we asked for?”

“It is all here.” Jeremiah pulled out the timers and explosives. Instructing them what to do to help him, Murphy set the charges at both entrances and directly in front of the time gate. It took over two hours to get it all set just right.

Once outside the top entrance they retreated down the path to a safe distance and pushed the remote button.

The peaceful woods burst in an explosion of sound and fury. They hurried back to the SUV making the trip on foot in record time and roared off to tell Syd of their success.

Angry swarms of demons followed squealing in rage. They dreaded having to report the loss of their treasure of knowledge and the weapon.

Osiris and Anubis and their army of angels and higher demons fought in the sky above the earth leaving streaks of red as they flashed their weapons against the angels of God.  Brilliant flashes lit up the cavern where the angels of God fought their old enemies until they saw their charges escape. They then disappeared in a large flash blinding their enemies for a time. It was enough. Their charges were out of harms way and had accomplished their purpose.
