Chapter Nine April in 21st. Century A.D.
Paul glanced in the rear view mirror. The Caddy had disappeared. Who were these
guys? He increased his speed and headed for an almost invisible cut off that went through
the woods a mile down the road. He whirled his car in an almost ninety degree turn and
raced down the one lane dirt road kicking up dust behind him like a smoke screen. He had
raced stock cars in his younger days and knew he could out drive his tormentors. He had
done it before.
He headed toward a pond directly ahead of him. There was a small incline just in
front of it and no bridge. Smiling to himself he floored the gas and hit the incline at
just the right speed and became airborne. He landed with wheels spinning on the other side
of the pond. He had kicked up enough dust that his pursuers would not even see the pond
until it was too late.
Now under the cover of thick woods within the confines of the New Mexico Capitan
Mountains, he ventured a glance into his rear view mirror. He heard the splash as their
car hit the middle of the pond. Seeing their car sinking and two figures diving out
windows sputtering and coughing Paul allowed himself a satisfied laugh.
He continued on to a deserted shack. He parked his car in a place where it would be
hidden from view and walked the rest of the way. The shack was completely hidden within
the confines of the trees that surrounded it. He could stay here for a while since it was
well stocked with whatever he might need.
It was getting cold
so he placed some logs in the fireplace and started a cozy fire and sat in an old wooden
rocking chair in front of the fire. He gazed dreamily into the flames letting his mind
drift. He picked up the gold-framed picture of his ex-wife and five year old daughter and
gazed fondly at their faces. He knew his wife made the right decision when she divorced
him. Every moment they lived with him put their lives in jeopardy. He looked with longing
at the picture of his daughter. He touched her face with his finger and remembered her
last, I love you, Daddy. That was a year ago. It seemed loneliness had become
his lot in life because of what he knew. He remained in the chair and slipped into a
welcome dreamless sleep. |
