Chapter Ten
LAND OF THE GIANTS
The scene, which greeted them seemed not to have changed except for the sound of loud
voices in the distance.
Jeremiah held out his empty arms. "RC is gone."
"If we are indeed on the other side of the
destruction, RC probably went back to his own time. That civilization can't mix with this
one. Most people think every ancient bone they find on this planet is related to us
somehow, but that just isn't the case. God started all over with a new civilization that
started with Adam and Eve. RC belongs to that first civilization, not to ours. He was a
good little companion."
"I'm going to miss the little guy," Dan murmured.
"That noise is getting closer," Laura said as she
moved toward the sound.
"We'd better find cover until we know whether they're
friendly or not." Dan reached for Laura to pull her back when a giant hand engulfed
her.
She kicked, bit and screamed as the hand raised her into
the air. Terrified she found herself staring into the eye of her attacker. The one eyed
cyclops laughed as she struggled. The hand brought her even with his face until she could
smell his fetid breath. It was more than she could bear. Blackness closed around her.
The three men were kicking and stabbing with sticks at the
feet of the giant trying to get him to put her down.
Laughing at their efforts he swooped them up with his other
hand. He held them all up and brought them to his open fang filled mouth.
They heard an explosive shout behind them. The hand stopped
and the mouth closed.
Dan turned his head in the direction of the shout. He felt
himself being lowered with the others, including Laura, to the ground.
Still unconscious, Laura lay in a crumpled heap at
their feet.
The Cyclops backed away from them as he stared fearfully at
the one who had shouted. He joined several other giants of various sizes and shapes. Some
looked human and some were part animal and human, but all were bigger than any ordinary
man, ranging in size from eight feet to twenty. They were stranger than any sight
they had seen in Atlantis. The giant creatures backed away from the being who seemed
to be in charge.
As the three men watched, a man approached them. He
was their size with perfect features dressed in royal attire and bedecked with sparkling
jewels. He dismissed the strange crowd behind them with a wave of his hand.
Phil knelt beside Laura rubbing her wrists then picking her
up as she opened her eyes. He kept his arms around her protectively as the handsome man
approached.
"Why, what kind of dilemma are we in now?"
Jeremiah stared at the stranger nervously. "Thank you, God, that we are not dead and
in that creature's belly."
"Amen to that," Phil whispered holding Laura who
was still trembling. "We need to get Laura some help. I think she has gone into shock
or something."
"This man seems to have a lot of power. Maybe he can
help." Dan looked expectantly at the man who stood in front of them.
"My name is Zeus. I am god there. Give her to me.
She'll be all right." He reached for Laura as Phil tightened his grip on her.
"I assure you, I will not hurt her." He held out
his hand. The man spoke in perfect English much to their surprise.
Laura pulled away from Phil and took the offered hand.
"How is it you know our language? I don't think
English is spoken anywhere in this time." Phil asked as he watched the stranger
warily.
"I told you. I am god here. I know all languages. I
only need to hear a few words and I can speak it. I heard you talking as I
approached."
"There is only one God," Jeremiah stated as he glared
at the stranger. He had already decided he did not like this man at all.
"You said you are a god." Dan eyed him
suspiciously. "I've heard the name Zeus before. Are you the father of Hercules?"
Zeus chuckled at the question, ignoring Jeremiah for the
moment. "I've never heard the name Hercules. My children are those with whom you've
already had an unfortunate encounter."
Phil grew pale at the answer. He looked at Jeremiah who had
also paled. Both had realized the significance of the statement.
"Are you an angel then?" Dan continued. "You
remind me a little of Salamas, an angel we all knew once." Dan had not noticed the
discomfiture of his two companions.
Laura just stared at Zeus silently totally entranced at the
handsome stranger who called himself a god.
"I am not familiar with the term. Come with me. I'll
show you my palace where you can rest and eat. I want to learn more about you and where
you are from. This language you speak is different from any other I have ever heard. You
must be from a place I am not acquainted with."
They began walking behind Zeus who turned around and said,
"Please, you must be tired. Allow me." With a snap of his fingers he whisked
them away.
XXX
"Well, we've been fluffed and buffed," Dan said
holding out his arms and examining himself and his new attire. Jeremiah and Phil were dong
the same; "so now what?"
"Where's Laura?" Phil asked. "We haven't
seen her since we got there."
"She is getting the same treatment I am
guessing," Jeremiah played with the silver tassel around his waist.
Some men came and motioned them to follow. They were human
like themselves. The trio followed obediently.
they were led to a great hallway that had white marble
benches on either side. They seemed to be made for people their own size. The men leading
them halted and motioned for them to be seated on the benches. They then stationed
themselves at various locations guarding the hallway.
They could hear music playing in the background.
"I wonder where Zeus's children are?" Dan
rumbled nervously.
"You don't realize the significance of those children,
do you?" Phil said.
"You have never read of them in your Christian
Scriptures?" Jeremiah seemed surprised.
"I went to Sunday school like most kids. The only
giant I ever remember hearing about is Goliath, the giant that David killed."
"Where do you think Goliath came from?" Phil
asked.
"Never gave it much thought, actually."
Goliath and all the giants and monsters of legend are the
offspring of human women and fallen angels," Phil told him. "In Genesis 6:2, it
says, "the sons of God (which are angels) saw the daughters of men that they were
fair, and they took them wives of all they chose: ...then verse four says, "There
were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that (before and after Noah's
flood) when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bare children to
them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." And we all saw
them with our own eyes."
"Zeus is a fallen angel then, right?" Dan saw
Phil and Jeremiah nodding in the affirmative. "So I was right when I called him an
angel. He is one of Lucifer's angels and calls himself a god."
"To the people of this time he is a god as are many of
his companions. We hear of them in legends such as Greek and Babylonian mythology. The
Romans worshipped them as well. The Egyptians worshipped them in the biggest way of all.
Oy, they were very cruel to any who would not worship them I do not think I like the idea
of accepting the hospitality of one of them."
"I don't see where we have much choice right
now," Phil pointed out. "And I don't like the way he was looking at Laura or the
way she was looking at him."
"Beauty has many times become a curse with my people.
Even the Nazis used our beautiful women in horrible ways. In Laura's case I believe her
beauty has also become a curse." Jeremiah shook his head sadly.
"Hey, don't worry, Phil. I'm sure it's you she really
cares about," Dan said with a chuckle.
"Not funny. If he decides to make her his bride or one
of his concubines she could become mother to a monster like the ones we've seen."
"Maybe God will rescue her," Dan offered raising
his eyebrows.
"I'm counting on it." Phil lapsed into silence.
Jeremiah clumsily patted him on the shoulder. "I will
pray for her, too."
Two guards came toward them and motioned them to follow.
XXX
They stood before Zeus. Dan glanced around curiously. Phil
and Jeremiah stared at Laura who was seated on a smaller throne next to Zeus. Her blond
hair glistened, as did the jewels on her new royal garments.
"Kneel!" Zeus roared.
They refused to comply.
Three burly guards struck them hard behind the knees
forcing them into a kneeling position then held the points of their swords to the back of
their necks to keep them there.
"Is this the way you treat your guests?" Dan asked
angrily.
"Silence!" Zeus roared.
The guard behind him pressed the point of the sword at the
back of his neck into the flesh until rivulets of blood coursed down his back.
Jeremiah and Phil on either side of Dan whispered to him to
be quiet and play along for now.
"Oh, please don't hurt them," Laura begged.
"They don't understand who you really are. We come from far away and don't know any
of the customs here."
"For your sake I will give them another chance, but
you understand I cannot tolerate rebellion. It would set a bad example."
Laura turned pale as the hungry Cyclops entered the throne
room along with some of his companions.
"Do not be afraid, beautiful one. He is to be punished
for what he did to you. Observe."
Zeus pointed his finger at the Cyclops. A ray of light shot
out from the end of it.
The Cyclops screamed as his flesh melted from his bones
until there was nothing but a puddle on the floor, which also vanished in a puff of smoke.
The other giants melted into the background in terrified
silence.
Laura said no more, but remained in a shocked hush.
Zeus motioned the guards to back away from the trio
kneeling before him.
"He was my own child and I tolerated no rebellion from
him so never think I will hesitate to do what I deem necessary should you displease me
again."
A fine mist of perspiration beaded the brows of Dan and
Jeremiah. Phil seemed calm.
Spidery deformed shadows seemed to be darting around the
room. some giggled. They darted at will in and out of the giants and humans in the room.
some darted toward the trio kneeling on the floor.
Phil hissed some words at them and they fled shrieking in
terror.
"My little friends do not like you," Zeus rumbled
with a slightly discernible edge of curiosity.
"Who are they?" Jeremiah asked.
"They are the spirits of the first civilization who
lived here. They serve me as well as all others you see; as you, too, will serve."
"They are demons!" Phil announced calmly.
"So you have your own name for them. No matter, I
intend to make your female companion my new bride." Zeus lounged back as he gauged
Phil's reaction.
Phil's face remained an impassive mask. Dan and Jeremiah
followed Phil's example. No need to let their host know any more than absolutely
necessary.
"You," Zeus pointed at Dan. "Tell me where
you are from and why you are here."
"I am from Baraboo, Wisconsin and we are all just
touring the world for adventure." Blood dripped down his neck onto the marble floor.
"I must put a stop to that," Zeus rumbled as he
pointed his finger toward Dan.
"Nooooo!" Laura screamed.
A soft blue light leapt from his finger and swirled around
Dan's neck healing the cut and causing all the drops of blood to disappear.
Laura sighed, in relief, as did the others.
"You must learn to trust me, my dear," Zeus said
as he caressed her face fondly.
"You three will work in the fields until I decide what
else I will do with you."
"Well, at least, allow us to say good-bye to Laura
since we will probably never see her again." Phil asked.
"I see no harm in that. You will be escorted into the
hall and I will allow her to come to you for a very brief visit then you will go to your
assigned duties."
Zeus motioned to the guards to escort them out.
When they had gone he turned to Laura. He kissed her long
and tenderly. "Just remember who you belong to," he whispered.
Dewey eyed she stared into his handsome face.
"How could I ever forget?"
"Go now and say your farewells to your friends."
Zeus smiled as he watched her go to the hall confident in
the spell he had cast over her.
He snapped his fingers. The guards snapped to attention.
The giants did likewise. "All of you, including the shadow beings, are to watch their
every move and listen to every word and report to me. No harm is to come to them. I just
want to know everything they know, then I will decide their fate. The woman called Laura,
will remain until she bares me a child, so guard her well."
XXX
"Please listen to me," Phil whispered to Laura
mindful of the guards around them. "He is a fallen angel and has all the powers of an
angel at his disposal. Don't be deluded by it. He wants you to be part of his plan and the
plan of all fallen angels to contaminate the human race with their seed."
"Contaminate? He is so handsome and perfect. How could
he contaminate anything?" Laura argued.
"Do not be fooled by what you see," Jeremiah
said. "Philip is right about this. Do you not remember how he destroyed his own child
so easily and would have done the same to us, but let us live to impress you."
"I don't understand all they're saying, but remember
the things we've seen in the ancient past. This is part of Lucifer's plan." Dan
looked at Phil and Jeremiah. "What is it Zeus is trying to accomplish here? What do
you mean contaminate the race?"
"Even after the Earth was judged and destroyed by the
first flood angels intermarried with human women causing such evil, God destroyed the
Earth again with Noah's flood. Now it is happening again."
"I have never understood their true purpose,
either." Jeremiah sighed.
"Don't you see? They are trying to contaminate the
race to keep the Son of God from being born. After Noah's flood God commands the
Israelites to destroy every man, woman and child of the land of Canaan when they go in to
conquer it. He wanted no intermingling between the Israelites and the giants and others
they conquered. There were obvious spiritual reasons. He certainly didn't want them
led away into spiritual adultery through idol worship, but He didn't want their
contaminated blood in the genetic line either."
"It seems to me that being mingled with angels would
make the human race stronger, not weaker." Dan argued.
"Yes, that's what I think, too." Laura said.
"It is not God's plan. He has promised us humans who
put our trust in Him that we are joint heirs with Christ inheriting with Him the rule of
the whole universe. This promise is not for the angels that rebelled against Him. They
have power, yes, but we will someday have even more than them as rulers with Jesus over
everyone, including them"
"The Messiah does give all these promises. I would
like to talk to more about this Jesus sometime," Jeremiah said.
"I'm not sure about all this, but some of it makes
sense to me, Laura." Dan rumbled in his most serious tone. "We just need to get
out of here. Stall any physical advances as best you can to be on the safe side."
The guards came and escorted Laura back to the throne room
her head spinning with all she had been told.
Other guards appeared to lead Dan, Phil, and Jeremiah away
to their new destination. None of them noticed the flitting shadows, just out of their
line of sight, that followed them.
***
Dan, Phil and Jeremiah occupied a small abandoned house in
a small village. Some villagers stood outside their door waiting to meet them, curious to
find out more about the new strangers.
Dan nominated himself official greeter and went outside to talk to them. He motioned the
others to follow.
He pointed to himself and said slowly, "Dan,"
then pointed to the others and said their names.
The small group of men nodded their understanding and
introduced themselves in like manner. They motioned to a few women with baskets of food to
come forward. The women offered the food to the trio.
Dan took a basket and pointed to one of the pieces of fruit
in it and spoke a name. They shook their heads and told them the name of the fruit in
their language. The language lesson went on for some time then the one who seemed to be
the leader held up his hand, smiled and led the others away, leaving them alone with the
baskets of food.
While they were hungrily consuming the food, Jeremiah
seemed lost in thought. "Their language sounds familiar. I studied several languages
in school before the Nazis came. I had sort of a natural talent for it. It sounds almost
like Aramaic with some differences. I think I can learn it without much difficulty."
"Great. That'll save us a lot of time."
Phil's face brightened for the first time since Zeus took Laura.
"You can do all the talking, Jeremiah. I seem to have
a knack for sticking my foot in my mouth anyway," Dan said, "so maybe that's for
the best."
They all laughed for the first time since they had entered
this land of the giants.
